2019 is the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Lancaster Canal and as a big part of the celebrations; IWA will be holding the IWA National Trailboat Festival alongside Country Fest at Westmorland County Showground on 1st and 2nd of June.
There will be over 20 boats at the festival all dressed up in their best flags and bunting. Boats trips on the canal will be available for the public on the Lancaster Canal Trust trip boat Waterwitch which has been freshly painted for the bicentenary, or try your hand at canoeing with trips provided by Bendrigg Trust and Cumbria Canoeists. Walk along the canal towpath and see the canal come to life with lots of water based activity. And on Saturday at 1.00pm there will be a boat handling competition at the Winding Hole north of Mattinsons Bridge no 168, a short walk from the showground.
On the showground there will be a special area for the Trailboat Festival. There will be stands from Lancaster Canal Trust, IWA National, Canal and River Trust, RNLI, and many more, all providing information about the lovely Lancaster Canal. Your local IWA will be providing fun activities for children and Waterway Recovery Group will be hosting “Drive a Digger,” for kids of all ages.
On Sunday evening at 9.30 there will be an illuminated boat parade leaving from Coal Yard Wharf. This is open to anyone and will be a spectacular sight not to be missed.
